The DIY mold test that samples the way a pro would.

Most mold kits give you one way to take a sample. This award-winning kit gives you four — air, HVAC, a direct swab of visible growth, or a piece of the material itself — so you can match the method to whatever you're actually worried about. It's a do-it-yourself kit built on the way professionals think about mold: sample, watch, and if something grows, you'll see it within a couple of days at no extra cost. If you want to know exactly what kind of mold it is, you can mail your sample in using the included prepaid envelope for a genus-level lab identification — that lab analysis is a separate $40 fee. Recognized with a 2025 Top Ten Reviews Gold placement, PRO-LAB is a brand we're comfortable putting our name next to.

Why we carry this product

We only sell what we'd use ourselves, and this is the kit we reach for when we want options. The four sampling methods cover real-world situations — a settling plate for room air, a vent test for the HVAC system, a swab for mold you can see, and a bulk sample for suspect material. What we appreciate most is the methodology: PRO-LAB has you compare an indoor sample against an outdoor one, which is exactly how an inspector judges whether an indoor reading is actually a problem. We'll still tell you plainly that this is a screening tool, not a substitute for a professional in-person inspection — PRO-LAB itself points you to a certified InterNACHI inspector for that. But as a first, methodical step, it's one of the best DIY kits on the market. — Mike Thomas, President & Lead Inspector, Pelican One Inspections

Four ways to sample.

Choose the method that fits the situation. The settling plate test leaves a prepared petri dish open to a room's air for an hour to capture what's floating in it. The HVAC test tapes the dish to your farthest air vent and runs the fan to sample your duct system. The visual swab lets you wipe mold you can already see and transfer it to the dish. And the bulk sample lets you send in a piece of the material itself. You use one method per dish, then incubate and check for growth in as little as 48 hours (rechecking at 72 and 96 hours for slower growth).

Mail it in for a genus-level ID.

Seeing growth tells you something's there. To find out what it is, seal the dish, drop it in the enclosed postage-prepaid envelope, and mail it to PRO-LAB's lab. A lab analysis fee ($40) covers identifying the genus (type) of mold present, with results emailed within seven business days. In a hurry? Express service returns results within three business days for an additional $15.

Testing the air? You'll want two.

Worth knowing before you buy: air sampling is only meaningful as a comparison. PRO-LAB has you take one sample indoors in the area of concern and a second sample outdoors — if the indoor growth is significantly heavier or a different type than what's outside, that points to a problem. So for air testing, plan on two kits (one indoor, one outdoor), plus an additional kit for each separate indoor area you want to check. A single kit is fine for a visual swab or bulk sample of mold you can already see.
